A male rose-breasted grosbeak [pheucticus ludovicianus] makes a backyard appearance as the spring bird migration gets underway in earnest in middle Alabamaland.

Spring Bird Migration Off To A Tanager Start

The spring bird migration is finally off to a tanager start, I mean tangible start, as a scarlet tanager [piranga olivacea] made an appearance, along with the first rose-breasted grosbeak. We’ve had a few ruby-throated hummingbirds coming through for the past three weeks, plus a few gold finches, pairs of brown thrashers and Eastern blue birds.

Since there’s no news anyway, it’s time to stop and smell the azaleas in Alabamaland. If you look long and hard enough, you might just see the abyss in this close-up, turned into art by a little reflective water and a touch of late afternoon spring light.

Dogwoods In Early Bloom in Alabamaland

It’s an unseasonably warm, dry beginning to spring in Alabamaland, and the dogwoods are in full bloom early, strangely, after a long, relatively cold winter. They will be gone before Easter. A sign of global warming? You decide…
