Bush Faces Opposition To Planned Attack on Iran

February 28th, 2007

President George W. Bush is encountering stiff resistance from the Pentagon brass to the prospect of expanding the Middle East conflict to Iran. After acquiescing to Bush’s ill-fated strategies on Afghanistan and Iraq, some senior U.S. commanders are contemplating resignations if Bush presses ahead with attacks on Iran. The revolt of the generals may reach as high as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pace.

Is Bush Hiding the Ball on War With Iran?

February 2nd, 2007

Much as he did before the Iraq invasion, President George W. Bush is limiting the debate about war with Iran, offering assurances that he considers war “a last resort” even as he moves military forces into place.

Similarly, the Democrats and the national press corps are behaving mostly as either passive observers or willing enablers. There have been remarkably few front-page stories about the consequences if Bush gives the order nor lively debates on TV news about possible peaceful alternatives.

Iran Clock Is Ticking

January 31st, 2007

Time may be running out for Congress and the American people to put in place any constraints on President George W. Bush before he plunges ahead with a new war against Iran.

Military and intelligence sources say the preparations for a major bombing campaign are moving ahead swiftly, with the deteriorating U.S. situation in Iraq adding to Bush’s urgency.

The thinking goes that if Bush’s position collapses in Iraq, a window of opportunity for challenging Iran may close, too.

The Illogic of a Wider Mideast War

January 16th, 2007

Despite Bush administration denials about planned attacks on Iran, there is a powerful and dangerous illogic carrying the United States toward a wider war in the Middle East.

There also is an accumulation of evidence that George W. Bush is putting in place the military and political infrastructure for escalating the Iraq War into a regional conflagration.

Indeed, the momentum might already be too strong - and the preparations too advanced - to turn around.

Bush Shocks Broadcasters With Wider War Prospects

January 12th, 2007

In a White House background briefing, George W. Bush surprised TV news executives with a stark warning about an imminent crisis with Iran, and he presented an alarmist vision of a region-wide explosion.

Then, Bush inserted language in his Iraq War speech suggesting cross-border attacks against Iran and Syria and announcing deployment of Patriot missiles.

All this comes amid reports that Israel may be preparing for risky air strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Finally, the mainstream U.S. media may be taking the prospect of a wider war seriously.

Bush’s ‘Global War on Radicals’

December 23rd, 2006

The United States will never win the “war on terror,” in part, because George W. Bush keeps applying elastic definitions to the enemy, most recently expanding the conflict into a war against “radicals and extremists.”

The change makes the struggle so amorphous that Bush theoretically could strike at anyone he doesn’t like whether there’s a credible link to international terrorism or not. The word shift also portends an endless war between the United States and the world’s one billion Muslims.

Why Bush Wants A Wider War

August 3rd, 2006

George W. Bush and his neoconservative advisers saw the Israel-Hezbollah conflict as a chance to get the Israelis to spread the war to Syria and achieve the long-sought goal of “regime change” in Damascus. But sources say the Israeli government torpedoed the scheme, deciding instead to concentrate on rooting Hezbollah guerrillas out of southern Lebanon.
