I caught up with Manuel Cuevas at the Day of the Dead celebration on Birmingham’s Southside Tuesday night and got him to explain the purpose behind the event.
Manuel is the designer who turned Johnny Cash into the “Man in Black” and put Elvis in a jumpsuit, according to biographies on the Web, including a story from National Geographic and Wikipedia and his own Website.
A good time was had by all at the Big Full Moon Old Time Music Show 2010 in Waverly, Alabama, put on by Scott Peek of Standard Deluxe, with Woody Pines and the Tennessee Valley Vagabonds and War Eagle Chili.
(I had to do something to take a break from the “gloom and doom” on the Gulf). Camped out for a couple of nights in Waverly, Alabama. Near perfect fall weather for October in Alabamaland.
“Birthday” is a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and performed by The Beatles on their double album The Beatles (commonly known as The White Album). The song is an example of the Beatles’ return to more traditional rock and roll form, although their music had increased in complexity and it had developed more of its own characteristic style by this point. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr performed it for Starr’s 70th birthday on July 7, 2010.
In this video, the number one hit in a YouTube search for birthday songs, Sir Paul McCartney performs it live in Moscow’s Red Square with Rusty Anderson on lead guitar, Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums, Paul “Wix” Wickens on keyboards and Brian Ray on rhythm guitar.

The 50th Anniversary of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue is a very historic event. Legacy Recordings is releasing a Collector’s Edition Box set on September 30 to celebrate this very important release. Take a look at this video and see why this is such an important release.
It’s been about 20 years since Jakob Dylan first began making music at Canter’s Deli in Los Angeles. Back then he was heading up his band The Wallflowers. In 1996, The Wallflowers put out Bringing Down The Horse, a record they made with musician and producer T-Bone Burnett. That record proved to be a success, both musically and financially.
Now 14 years later, Dylan has reunited with Burnett to create some of the best songs of his life, on his latest record, Women and Country — his second album under his own name.
His touring band includes those who helped him make that record, including Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. Fans of All Songs Considered have followed Case as a singer in The New Pornographers and as a mighty solo artist in her own right. Hogan, another terrific songwriter and singer, has been making records since the early ’90s. The two sang backing vocals with Jakob Dylan when he stopped by for a Tiny Desk Concert.
During the Bush years, we specialized in covering the politicization of the U.S. justice system as much as any news organization. Our archives are about the most comprehensive for anyone researching the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, and the original case against Richard Scrushy, which Glynn Wilson covered for The New York Times.
