Editor’s Note: The new conservative Republican majority in the Alabama Legislature seems intent on destroying teacher tenure in a bill supported by the corporate press in the state. This is how one Republican teacher feels about that.

As a life-long Reagan Republican, all I see in Montgomery, Alabama, are Republicans behaving as I believed the Democrats behaved for decades.

Many Republicans followed a stance on SB72 insuring the continued dissemination of erroneous information ignoring the truth about DROP for middle-class Alabamians. Many Republicans voted Yes on SB 72.

Then, many Republicans in the House voted Yes on HB414, increasing the amount teachers contribute to retirement; the rate at which the retirement contribution ramps up is obscene.

I am opposed to any bill that negatively effects the Education Trust Fund, raises the classroom divisor, and cuts supplies and services for Alabama’s most vulnerable — our students.

Before anyone casts another negative vote against our students, I challenge anyone to spend time with me in my classroom. I believe hearts would be touched and forever altered if time were taken to witness education at its best. Before anyone casts another negative vote against our students, I pray there will be soul-searching about the power each legislator commands.

Let us be truthful. Let us be truthful as legislators consider the status of their own pay raise. Let us be truthful as many legislators vote the futures of our Alabama youth away just to conform to Party lines.

I have never been ashamed to be a Republican in the state of Alabama until 2011. As my students and I strive for excellence each day, many Republicans continue casting votes that are shameful to me as a parent, educator, Republican, and Alabamian.

In the face of the tornado aftermath, leaving hundreds of Alabamians dead and homeless and penniless, I pray that everyone will help stop the truly mad behavior in Montgomery. Heartlessness on the part of the Alabama Republican Party will haunt and eventually destroy those legislators who persist on this destructive path.

I am a simple woman with a simple goal — to educate the students in our great state of Alabama.
