Senate Republicans Block Investigation of BP Oil Disaster

September 3rd, 2010

The U.S. House voted 420 to 1 to give the presidential commission investigating the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico full subpoena power. Conservative Republicans in the Senate blocked it.

If the commission does not have subpoena power, many activists are not asking the question: Can there be a real investigation?

  1. Rowland Scherman Says:

Just because BP said they would clean up their mess, doesn’t guarantee that they will. This Senate vote is an outrage, and those states whose senators voted against this investigation–have crooked senators.

  2. Rowland Scherman Says:

By the way, how did Alabama’s senators vote?

  3. Yana Davis Says:

This is utterly ridiculous. Has big oil got the Republicans so scared, and are they so spineless, as to not do the right thing, i.e., give the commission supoena power?

What are they afraid of? Losing their Senate seats? The polls have them, at least temporarily, way ahead in the midterms. A couple more stupid moves like this and they might not be ahead any longer.

Worse than losing your Senate seat, far worse, is not doing the right thing. Where are Everett Dirksen and Barry Goldwater when you need them?

  4. Dan Fulton Says:

    The Crude Coalition:
    Glenn Beck,
    BP, and the
    GOP.

  5. Christopher Mosley Says:

Is Richard Shelby one of the Republicans blocking this investigation?

  6. Glynn Wilson Says:

    Of course…
