But Only Temporarily: It’s A Test

The oil has stopped. For now.

After 85 days and up to 184 million gallons, BP finally gained control over one of America’s biggest environmental catastrophes Thursday by placing a carefully fitted cap over a runaway geyser that has been gushing crude into the Gulf of Mexico since early spring.

Though a temporary fix, the accomplishment was greeted with hope, high expectations – and, in many cases along the beleaguered coastline, disbelief.

From one Gulf Coast resident came this: “Hallelujah.” And from another: “I got to see it to believe it,” according to the AP.

Glenn, it seems that BP has removed the pressure gauges from their live feed. Haven’t been able to access them on-line for a day or so, right when this issue is so critical. What do you know about it?

I thought it was 88 days. But after nearly three months, one way or another, it’s about time. Hope the data looks good and they put that cap back when they’ve done their analysis. Meantime, even if there’s not another single ounce of oil leaked, the damage is already beyond calculation and it will be many years before it’s completely reversed.

Meantime, I want to know if the sea turtles who hatch from the rescued eggs on the Atlantic coast (where they’re being moved) will understand they’re supposed to come back to Daulphin Island or Perdido Bay to lay their own eggs one day. Probably not, so there will have to be another massive collection of *their* eggs and replanting on the Gulf coast in future years to actually restore the turtles.

Yana: It was 87 days yesterday.

Good question about the eggs. I’ll find out and reporter that later.

Here’s the link to the story explaining what will happen with the Gulf Coast turtles.

As for the live feed info, I’ll have to check…
