Sparks supports a lottery, but it was Davis who proved to be the big gambler – voting against the health care reform bill and otherwise alienating what would be his base.

Davis never had a base, except a few big money changers in Mountain Brook and New York.

If he had been a reliable Democrat, I would have voted for him. He is charismatic and I thought would have had a good chance at winning…. but he lost me on health care.

Not sure where the charismatic impression comes from. There’s nothing in my experience dealing with him to back up that idea.
Let me share this story one more time from December 2008.

According to the unofficial results, Davis got 119,908 votes and Sparks got 199,190 votes. That’s only 319,098 total voters in the Democratic Primary in a state with 4 million people. More analysis on the way…

Bradley Byrne got 137,093 votes, or 27 percent of Republicans. Unknown Robert Bentley of Tuscaloosa got 123,321 votes, or 25%. Tim James to 123,181 votes, 25 percent. Roy Moore got 94,425, 19 percent. Bill Johnson got 8,289 votes, or 1 percent, and Charles Taylor picked up 2,585 votes while James Potts got 1,525.
So the total number of Republicans voters in the primary was 367,238, according to the unofficial results posted by the New York Times.

ALL registered voters can vote
in the Republican run-off.
Vote and vote often!!!
At this moment I plan to vote
against Byrne.

There was a time, that those of us of a certain age can remember, when the Republicans in Alabama still nominated candidates by convention, and practically all the active GOPers in the state were there, under one roof.

The math shows that unless the Democrats do something to pickup at least 50,000 voters in the general election, they are toast…
