Jimmy Buffet Surprises Diners With Appearance at Lulu’s in Gulf Shores

June 30th, 2010

Beach bum crooner and chief Parrothead Jimmy Buffet played a surprise concert Wednesday night at Lulu’s, his sister Lucy’s restaurant in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

He was supposed to play a free benefit show on the beach July 1, but it got postponed because of Hurricane Alex, which has churned up the Gulf and pushed a lot more oil on shore.

It was an Intimate show, according to Debbie Elliott, a correspondent for National Public Radio.

“He ended with ‘when the coast is clear’,” she said on her Facebook page, expressing hope that it will be again, soon.

The beaches are getting hit hard right now as the winds whip BP’s oil northeast in the Gulf of Mexico.

Groups Sue BP for Violations of Endangered Species Act

June 30th, 2010

A coalition of animal rights and conservation groups filed a federal lawsuit in Louisiana on Wednesday, accusing British Petroleum of violating the Endangered Species Act and other federal laws.

The lawsuit contends that “controlled burns” in the Gulf of Mexico are fatal to endangered sea turtles, which are unable to escape the boom and are then “burned alive,” according to Animal Welfare Institute President Cathy Liss.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana by AWI along with the Center for Biological Diversity, Turtle Island Restoration Network and Animal Legal Defense Fund.

How Will Migratory Birds Weather the Gulf Coast Oil Spill?

June 30th, 2010

US Fish and Wildlife Service Announces Strategy

In a few weeks, millions of waterfowl and other migratory birds will soon begin their fall migration to wintering and stopover habitat along the Gulf Coast.

In anticipation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with partners to anticipate and minimize the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon/BP oil spill on these birds, according to a press release issued today.

Oddly, the Service focused its release on saving the wildlife for hunting.

“We will continue to monitor the impact of the ongoing spill on waterfowl, and will take those impacts into account when establishing waterfowl hunting frameworks for the upcoming season,” according to the release.
