Shelby Applauds End to Offshore Drilling Ban

    September 27, 2008

    Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today announced that the Continuing Resolution, which will fund the federal government through March 6, 2009, will not include the offshore oil-drilling and oil shale exploration moratorium language. The Senate today passed the Continuing Resolution by a vote of 78-12.

“I have long advocated for real changes to our energy policy, such as allowing for offshore drilling,” said Shelby. “For far too long, the United States has been dependent on foreign sources for oil and gas and it is high-time we cut the tie that keeps us bound to them for our energy. Lifting the ban on offshore drilling will not only benefit the state of Alabama, but will enable America to use its own resources to alleviate the burden of record-high gas prices. This is a victory for the American consumer and I applaud Congress for taking this step towards a sound energy policy.”
