Sparks Pulls Ahead of Davis in Final Week of Governor’s Race

May 24th, 2010

A new poll conducted by Montgomery-based Matrix LLC for the Ron Sparks campaign, corroborated by two independent polls, shows Sparks with a one-point lead over Rep. Artur Davis, the first poll during the election to show Sparks with a lead with a week to go before the June 1 vote.

Artur Davis blew a 30-point lead at the beginning of the race to fall behind by one point with one week left in the election, according to a press release from the Sparks campaign.

“We must capitalize on this momentum,” his campaign urged in an e-mail alert.

Just this weekend the Associated Press reminded Alabamians that their choice in this primary is not between “cookie cutter candidates,” according to the campaign. “They reminded Alabama parents that there is only one candidate who will fight for an education lottery to fund pre-kindergarten and send every Alabama high school graduate to college.”

They reminded Democratic primary voters that only one candidate will fight to tax and regulate gambling in Alabama, and only one candidate will give Alabamians the right to decide for themselves if they want gambling in their communities or not, according to the campaign.

“They reminded Alabama taxpayers that only one candidate will close tax loopholes and make sure that multinational corporations are paying their fair share,” Sparks said.

Pundits, pollsters, and folks on the ground are saying Spark’s message resonates with the people of Alabama.

“We need to keep our momentum going in this last week of the campaign, and that means television ads, phone banks, radio ads, and going door to door across the state,” Sparks said in a fund raising appeal. “As Artur Davis rolls out negative ads this week, every dollar will count in letting Alabama know what Ron Sparks is really about.”

  1. John Says:

What Alabama voters (Democratic) should carefully think about when even considering Mr Sparks is he has repeatedly blocked any kind of organic certification process for its farmers and food producers. Consider the state’s organic farmers currently are forced to go to Georgia and South Carolina for example and pay agricultural inspectors to drive hundreds of miles to inspect their farms. This because Mr Sparks thinks organics are a fad.
Mr Sparks is simply not in touch with the direction agriculture has gone and I cannot see how he can be a viable Governor. His current job performance and skillset – which is painfully inadequate, will only be more obvious if he is governor. We simply cannot afford him in the current position much less a higher office.

  2. Yana Davis Says:

With all due respect to John’s position, it seems self-defeating to me to vote against Sparks based on this single issue, given that Sparks has a better chance of winning in November. He can be brought around to organic certification after getting elected.

  3. Glynn Wilson Says:

Not to mention Sparks’ chief opponent is Artur Davis, a useless tool of big business and the biggest asshole I’ve ever met in my life covering politics for the past 30 years, and that includes George Wallace!
