The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has closed the Breton National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana to public entry, including the Chandeleur Islands, due to confirmation that BP’s oil slick made landfall there.
The public is prohibited from going to Chandeleur Island, Grand Gossier, Curlew, New Harbor Island, North Islands or Free Mason, according to a press release.
“The refuge closure is important to keep the public safe, to minimize disturbance to nesting colonial sea birds, and to allow personnel conducting cleanup operations and recovery efforts to work safely and efficiently,” said Tom R. MacKenzie, a media relations specialist and Native American liaison with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the Southeast region office in Atlanta.
