Alabama Governor Bob Riley: A Corrupt, Political Thug?

January 24th, 2010

Riley Caught on Tape Threatening the Press and Political Opponents

Bob Riley, the Republican Governor of Alabama who fantasized about Senator John McCain picking him for vice president and now has delusions of running for president, was caught in a recording making direct threats to anyone who might expose anymore of his corruption. He also makes a threat against anyone who “gets too close” to his family.

Some of the highlights:

Bob Riley is a political thug, according to the committee to impeach Riley, and has been a threat to Alabama since he took office 7 years ago.

Why doesn’t he want anyone to get close to his families?

-Son In Law Bob Campbell Law Firm Bradley Arant, before Riley took office, billed the State of Alabama just under $7,000. Since Riley has been in office they have billed the State of Alabama more than $4 million.

-His Son In Law Bob Campbell represents both the Indians and the Task Force to shut down gambling and has already spent $1 million of our tax dollars.

-His son Rob also got a $25 Million NO BID contract from Alabama to represent the state in a lawsuit vs. ExxonMobile, which was found guilty by a jury of ripping off the taxpayers by millions of dollars in oil and gas royalties for wells in the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks for reporting on this. Any ideas on the context of this? When was the video shot? What was the occasion? (Looks like a press conference for something.) What question prompted this response? Who asked the question? How the video came to light?

His reference to “the family” has a chilling, almost Mafia-like tone to it. Was some reporting going on at the time that possibly prompted this–about Rob or someone else?

Would love to know if there is more video out there that will help shine light on this.

Looks like a TV interview in Montgomery. I recognize the woman’s voice from covering all the trials down there. Black woman always outspoken. Can’t remember her name off the top of my head on a Sunday afternoon posting a column and maybe taking a nap (maybe watch some football).

If you listen close you can hear the question. The video came to me on Facebook and an e-mail list.

I believe there is a story from months back that made the mainstream press when Riley said this. Nothing much was made of it then. There’s most likely a version of this searchable in my archives.

So, Governor Riley doesn’t like it when we get too close to his family? It didn’t bother Riley to have my mother arrested by The ABC Board or to threaten to have my uncle’s license to sell alcohol revoked. It seems that Governor Riley can dish it out, but he can’t take it when he and his family are subjected to the same scrutiny.

I stand corrected. Chicago and Louisiana are not more corrupt than Alabama. They are all at the “corrupt, world class” level.

    Excellent reporting, Glynn.
