Tough Times Demand Real Leadership

November 30th, 2009

Guest Editorial Column
by Ron Sparks

Alabama is facing the greatest financial crisis of modern history with the potential looming on the horizon of firing thousands of teachers and denying care to thousands of nursing home residents. While other candidates for governor, both Democrat and Republican, refuse to address this crisis, I have offered a means of providing additional funding for our state without taxing working families.

Just last week, we learned that Alabama has one of the ten highest unemployment rates in the nation. This news comes on the heels of months of catastrophic financial projections that the Education Trust Fund, Medicaid, and other vital state services are at great risk.

Recently, federal stimulus money helped fill the holes in the state budget. That much-needed money has now been spent and the chickens are coming home to roost.

What’s been missing from the political debate is any effort on the part of my fellow candidates to be honest about our state’s financial condition and plain talk about what we are up against.

Basic laws of economics tell us that we can’t spend what we don’t have. Considering the crisis we are facing and the many needs we have, we have very few choices. We must cut services, raise taxes on the working people of this state, or as I have proposed, identify new revenue streams to flow into our state budgets.

I have been clear that I will never raise taxes on the hard working men and women of Alabama. Our families are already strapped with all they can handle just trying to keep a roof over their heads and food in their children’s mouths. I will not support any plan that that will put teachers out of work and takes supplies and technology out of your child’s classroom. Whether you live in Wilcox County or Mountain Brook, every child deserves the same standard of educational opportunities.

The only option left is to find new money for our state budgets.

Is It Time to Rename the Iron Bowl?

TV Lineup and Lines Below

Time Out
by Dan Rutledge

You know, it’s sort of fitting that Week No. 13 of the Southeastern Conference 2009 football season is also Grudge Match Week — where in-state or traditional rivals get together. You know, the “you can throw the record books out on this one” kind of games where a win for one team can salvage a losing season, send the fans home into the long dreary night of no-football with happy memories with which to sustain them.

There are seven SEC games on a long-Thanksgiving Week schedule that begins with one game Friday and has a full slate on Saturday. Four of the seven are league encounters and all of the games are of the traditional type.

Of course, the biggest game of the week, the annual Iron Bowl, where Alabama and Auburn battle to decide state bragging rights for the upcoming year, leads off the action, set for Friday afternoon. And you can say that this year’s edition is special … OK, OK, you are right … every Iron Bowl is special, but for different reasons each time around. (Maybe something will happen this year to inspire a new name for the game, since it hasn’t really been the Iron Bowl since leaving Legend Field in Birmingham).

New Left Media Video Captures Sarah Palin Supporters

November 25th, 2009

This NEW LEFT MEDIA film was produced and edited by Chase Whiteside (interviews) and Erick Stoll (camera).

On November 20, 2009, Sarah Palin visited Columbus, Ohio as part of her book signing tour for Going Rogue. When her supporters were asked broad questions about why they why they thought she should be president, the responses were vague: She’s “real.” She’ll “stick up for America.”

THERE ARE UNINFORMED OBAMA SUPPORTERS, TOO

It has been said in comments that we would find similarly talking point-driven, substance-less supporters at an Obama rally, and we agree. But no politician has emerged on the national stage as undefined and unqualified as Sarah Palin, and her public persona — which is anti-intellectual by definition — discourages substance. Instead, we get winking. One could hardly imagine her giving a complex speech about race in America, or speaking eloquently about our country’s relations with Islam. Not just because she couldn’t write such a speech (Obama has speech-writers, of course) but because she wouldn’t — such necessarily academic discussion is antithetical to the persona she’s created for herself and that her supporters have come to love.

CHERRY-PICKING

As for accusations of cherry picking, which are commonly thrown at interview-based videos, it simply isn’t what we did. We interviewed only a few more people than ended up in the video, not hundreds, and what was cut was done for time purposes. The people were selected at random — some offered to be interviewed — and we were only there for about 90 mins (it gets dark early and fast in Ohio right now). What didn’t make it into the video was just more footage of people talking generically or about taxes/spending, drilling, and abortion, and we constructed blocks in the piece to represent those issues. Of course the piece was edited to be entertaining (this is YouTube, after all, where the currency is cat videos) but we don’t believe we misrepresented the attitudes of the people at that signing in any way.

Karl Rove's New Group: Shift of Blamers (SOBs)

November 24th, 2009

Karl Rove has been the mastermind of a new movement called the Shift of Blamers — or SOBs — who have replaced the birthers, deathers, Tenthers, and teabaggers as the most successful anti-Obama group thus far.

Satire by R J Shulman

NEW YORK, (PTSD News) — Karl Rove announced today on Fox News that the Republican strategy to shift the blame for all of America’s woes from anything the Republicans may have caused to Obama and the Democrats is a complete success. “Our goal as Republicans, which was so eloquently spoken by Rush Limbaugh, is not to be the party of ideas or solutions, but the party that makes Obama fail. And the best way to do that is to shift blame for everything we Republicans screwed up to the current president.”

Rove has been the mastermind of a new movement called the Shift of Blamers — or SOBs — who have replaced birthers, deathers, Tenthers, and teabaggers as the most successful anti-Obama group thus far. The SOBs are made up of prominent Republicans, Fox News and the vast majority of talk radio.

“We needed to defeat or water down any health care reform that would cut into the profits of our friends who run the health care industry,” said Rove, “and luckily for us, the Democrats haven’t learned that lies always trump facts and that every congressman has his price.”

“Health care was just the start,” Rove said, “we’ve turned Bush’s blunder in Afghanistan into Obama’s war in which if he sends more troops in, he’s a warmonger, and if he pulls out, he’s a gay French chicken. It took Bush eight years to completely mess up the economy, but we have taken less than eight months to blame the entire mess on Obama, bank bailouts and all.”

“When it comes to women’s right, traditionally a Democrat issue,” Rove said, “we have been able to pin the sexist label on the liberals for their harsh treatment of Sarah Palin and Carrie Prejean. This is surely some of my best work since I was able to convince millions of Americans that George W. Bush should be in the White House rather than the nut house.”

“With the help of all of those SOBs, we will regain Congress and the White House in no time,” Rove concluded. “Remember, it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you shift the blame.”
