Secret Vistas: Chasing Autumn Color…

Chasing autumn color is a significant event in many climes, but for nature photographers in the Southeastern U.S., it can become a game or even an obsession. Can you find the bluebird in this picture? [Click on the image for a larger view].

These photo ops only come around once a year, and in Alabama, the season tends to come in two short phases a few weeks apart. The peak color should come around in the last couple of weeks of October, although the so-called “leaf season” officially extends to November 15.

This is a shot in the C-section of Wind Creek State Park in Alexander City, Alabama, on the morning of Saturday, October 10, 2009 near my campsite by Lake Martin.

There are a few color guides on the Web, one of the most interesting out of Gatlingburg, Tennessee, to promote the fall tourist season in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They say the season runs from August 15 to November 15, but we don’t believe it…
