    It’s difficult to believe that Rumsfeld is religious.

    My bet is that he used this tactic to manipulate George Bush. The device – quoting or referring to authorities that the intended recipient of a communication respects – is widely used.

    For instance, fundraising letters for nonprofits will often refer to people, events, etc., the targeted recipients are likely to recognize. Motivational speakers will do the same, often quoting great business or political leaders of the past. Jefferson, Carnegie, Lincoln and a few others are typical favorites.

    Rumsfeld gets an “A” in marketing communications along with a big “F” in ethics. He easily rises (or sinks, if you prefer) to the level of Machiavelli in this scenario.
