Seventy One Percent Favor Investigation for Political Justice

February 13th, 2009

According to a new Gallup poll, 71 percent of Americans support some kind of an investigation of Bush administration officials for politicizing the justice system. Another 63 percent support an investigation for warrantless wiretaps, and 64 percent support an investigation for torture.

That’s according to the USA Today/Gallup poll taken Jan. 30-Feb. 1. A total of 1,027 adults were surveyed, giving pollsters 95 percent confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

  1. Yana Davis Says:

Even if 71 percent did not favor such an investigation, the ethics of a theoretically impartial justice system, in which no one is above the law, mitigate for it.

Politically well-connected elites tend to insulate themselves from the operation of laws that everyone else must obey. That insulation must be eliminated to truly have a society in which everyone is equal before the law.

This has happened only rarely throughout human history.

Early elites – royalty and aristocracy – were blatantly and openly given legal status above others. With the advent of republics and democracies, elites now use political connections, as well as Byzantine laws and policies, to protect themselves.

Ultimately, it may be a matter of dominant culture and values more than anything else. As that changes, we may be able to get close to the elusive goal of true legal equality.

Until then, we will continue to have this kind of abuse and criminality. Going after criminality in the last administration is, however, a good first step. We can only hope it’s not the last.

Big step. There are many of us who think it and many more must be made for the US government to retain any legitimacy. I’m definitely one of them.
