| The city of Birmingham began work today on restoring a dam destroyed last Friday without a permit on Village Creek. City crews piled up dirt on both sides of where the pond flows into a drainage pipe, planted grass seed, and placed sand bags in the breach to form a temporary spillway. This is the scene as of about 3 p.m. Friday. More later… |

Interesting phone call today from some fans in Clay, Alabama, who often print my columns and pass the print edition out around town. The common sense thing to do?
“Well, why don’t they get some beavers to build a dam?”
“Brilliant idea. Wouldn’t cost a cent.”
“Oh, that’s what was there in the first place.”
“With all the agencies and departments of the city, including the horticulture department, what will that end up costing the taxpayers?”
“Good question.”
“There’s an old saying. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Thank you very much Ms. Nummy and/or your supervisors. Have you resigned yet?

It was very sad hearing what they did..not only for the watercress…but just the history of Roebuck Springs itself. This place should have been a historical marker and not touched but preserved. The springs wasa major water supply for the beginning of Birmingham…along with Wilson Springs. Larry Langford should make this a historic place and CLEAN UP EAST LAKE PARK for God sake!!!!! Let’s preserve our history!!! Thank you for writing on this very important story. Concerned Roebuck Springs citizen.
