trent (real first name is "chester" lott wasnt really a smart guy around the capitol, but his conniver and wheeler dealer sense was strong. he sensed that running as a democrat, althought right wing, bigoted democrat, among a field of 13 would probably not win the primary for him. so he ran as the lone republican. meanwhile, the losing dems were mad at the winner, sabotaged him, and lott got elected. the rest is history -- sad history.

Of course, but the story was about why he stepped down as Majority Leader, not why he resigned...

Lott retired to avoid 2-year lobbying rules that kicked in at the beginning of 2008. He can lobby starting at the end of December 2008 as a result.

It is not called Babylon-on-the-Potomac for nothing: scores of former Congress members from both houses earn six and seven figure incomes as fulltime lobbyists,

Who better to find the pork barrel for you than someone who helped design, build and stock it?

Happy birthday Jim : )

Now, any way you can send a note to that Auburn professor telling her I am not one of the bad guys? Thanks.

After posting this, I also e-mailed Jay Rosen at NYU. He e-mailed back and said he would add my story to this post, although it doesn't appear to be there yet.
