Never studied The Matrix, but if people depend only on the Birmingham News and FOX News and local TV news for information, they may as well be living in Plato's Cave - or The Matrix.

I figured out there was a whole other world out there when I went off to college many years ago at UA and started reading the New York Times and Washington Post in the library.

Now they don't even cover everything. You have to find a good headline chasing blogger now to really know what's going on in the world - and I'm not talking about Drudge and Dixie Dan : )

I was just watching "The Matrix" before reading this column and trying to explain to my 8 year old grandson that it is just fantasy and the world is not like that. hmmmm...Well maybe not quite yet, eh?

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn has died. His worked resurfaced over and over in my heart following the revelation of Guantanamo, Black sites, Abu Ghraib, and renditions.

Here's the notion burned in me:

"It was only when I lay there on rotting prison straw that I sensed within myself the first stirrings of good. Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart—and through all human hearts….” The Gulag Archipelago: 1918-1956

After awhile one would hope the people in the cave would accept the world beyond (Alabama). Once people thought the world was flat - perhaps more flat-topped people than a geological aberration - and that Earth was not the center of the Universe. Unfortunately, on a daily basis I see more people who think they are the center of Om and care not a dollop that others exist with opinions and points of view.

Perhaps, FOX will add The Cave to their fall lineup. More fun than voting people off an island or marrying millionaire, the winner(s) would be afforded the opportunity to accept the world beyond their limited perspective.

The losers are permitted to remain in The Cave with an endless supply or motor oil, light beer and John Deere caps. They can believe in what they are allowed to see; WWF, Ugly Betties and that no world exists beyond their sight.

We need to get enough people in this cave ahead of a preordained landslide victory that buries antiquated thinking and useless sentient beings.

Finally, we can move towards enlightenment and let those who want it not to enjoy life from beneath the ground and replenish the world with much need Humus.
