Birmingham News Ace Reporter Hits the ‘Big Time’

July 14th, 2008

This just in from Scott Horton.

Former Birmingham News ace reporter Brett Blackledge was recently hired by Ron Fournier, head of the AP’s Washington Bureau.

The AP’s Washington coverage has demonstrated a clear-cut GOP slant ever since Fournier took over, and the Blackledge hire is no doubt designed to help lock that in. Fournier’s key “inside source” and adviser is none other than Karl Rove.

This is now being reported by the independent Talking Points Memo:

Universal Theory of Bamboozlement

Earlier today we noted the possible role of AP Washington Bureau Chief Ron Fournier is turning the AP’s campaign coverage into “complete crap.”

Now from the just released Tillman Report, it seems Fournier was also one of the reporters exchanging emails the day of Tillman’s death with Karl Rove of all people - and according to the report at least, offering advice on how to handle the story.

“Keep up the fight,” Fournier tells Rove.

What fight? Objective journalism?

Looks like Rove’s Alabama Republican news buddy has hit the big time : )

It seems to me that you are just jealous that Blackledge can get a job as a real journalist and you can’t.

  2. Glynn Wilson Says:

Once again, GOP girl, former Auburn adjunct, you are going on what you “believe” again and not what any evidence shows.

I have a job. As an editor and a publisher. I own my own printing press. Ultimate freedom!

Why in the world would I want to work for the new right-wing editor of AP in DC? I already worked in DC! Time magazine on the Abu Ghraib story. I already made page one of the Sunday New York Times, five years ago!

Like the radio guy, you don’t understand independent journalism, free-lance journalism, or much of anything else.

Should I just go ahead and ban your IP now? Or do you want to have a discussion about something besides attacking me personally? That is not the game here. You can do that on other amateur blogs where anonymity reins, but how many times do I have to tell you you can’t do here!

Gooddamn you Christian Republicans just don’t listen, and you wouldn’t know a fact if it dropped on your head like a grand piano!!!!!!!!!

I am the one who told BB to use that little Pulitzer of his to go out and get a job at a real news organization somewhere. Guess what? He took my advice!

    Will you?

  3. Glynn Wilson Says:

No, really, GOP Girl, if I am so dumb and you are so smart, where is your blog? You get your kicks making negative comments on other people’s blogs. Why not get in on the action?

Oh, you don’t know how. Too bad. Thanks for the hits : )

  4. Glynn Wilson Says:

And you didn’t answer my question. Do you want to be banned now? Or, even though you can’t stand me, you must preserve your right to harass me?

Are you smug with yourself thinking you have done the Karl Rove cause some good by giving me grief? Wrong. Believe me, I can handle it. I am laughing. And we will see who gets the last laugh. Your buddy Karl is about to get his, finally…

  5. Susan Fillippeli Says:

Wow. I guess I really hit a nerve.

  6. Glynn Wilson Says:

No, but I guess that’s how you get to feel like you are somebody in life, by hitting someone else’s nerves on someone else’s blog. Get a life : )

  7. Glynn Wilson Says:

Like I said, bring on the hits, baby…

    You and “Fat Back Murphy”

    < : )

  8. Glynn Wilson Says:

Why don’t you figure out what a Gravatar is, Susan, and let us all see your picture?

Would you like to be my Republican sidekick? Try writing a blog post. Or, a story.

Or, did you used to teach your students at Auburn that good journalism means making personal attacks on other people’s Websites?

If you are so smart, why don’t you call Troy King and get him to either deny the story, or admit it and resign? Want to make a difference for your friend Bob Riley? He wants to appoint Luther Strange to the AG’s office before the 2010 election. Troy’s got to go…

  9. Glynn Wilson Says:

I mean, come on, say something to show us all you have a brain, please. If you disagree with me about something of substance, please enlighten us…

Otherwise, you are waisting my time and I am just going to ban your IP from showing up here and you will never be able to bother everybody here with your little jibes again. Nobody cares about that. That’s not what comments are for. Maybe it would help to think of it as a letter to the editor.

So, what is of concern to you today that you would like to opine about, to borrow Bill O’Reilly’s favorite word. We are all waiting with “baited breath.”

  10. Glynn Wilson Says:

    Nothing?

Well, perhaps I should enlighten all our new readers about you, then.

Susan and I met on an anonymous blog called the Political Parlor, where she also used the pseudonym GOP Girl. I actually tracked her down and talked to her on the phone once, since she claimed to be a journalism professor at Auburn. Of course the truth was she had taught a class or two there as an adjunct instructor before, but her title was not “professor.”

She didn’t believe my story about GOP Whistleblower Jill Simpson and the Siegelman case as a prime example of how the Bush administration politicized the Justice Department. She just couldn’t get her head around it - even when Ms. Simpson testified under oath and Karl Rove won’t.

She didn’t believe me when I reported that “60 Minutes” was going to run a story on the Siegelman case, even after it ran! She just couldn’t accept the fact that I was right!

She still doesn’t think I am right, apparently because she has a fondness in her heart for Karl Rove and George Bushy and Bob Riley. She liked the idea of Rove’s to ban gay marriage in a Constitutional Amendment, but she seems to have forgotten that Bush never followed up on that campaign promise, probably because he knew it would go nowhere, especially in a Republican Congress made up largely of gay Republicans.

She likes to take jibes at me from time to time, but has never, not once, offered up a substantive post explaining to readers exactly why she disagrees with me.

Correct me if I am wrong about any of this, GOP Girl, so we can set the record straight.

Still no word from Auburn. I guess she can’t muster a phrase…

Don’t forget to check back in on the comments on Troy King, up to 109 as this is posted, and more news yet to come there. We may be talking about this more Friday on Finebaum’s show, with a certain former Birmingham attorney in the other chair…
