Ospreys Nesting in Gulf State Park

March 18th, 2008

Several pairs of ospreys are now nesting in Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and the landscape is beginning to show some signs of recovery since taking a direct hit from Hurricane Ivan in 2004. We’re filing from the Dizzy Bean coffee shop in Gulf Shores after spending that night last night in the Flora-Bama Roadhouse Lounge campground after the big St. Patty’s Day party.

I have it from a confidential informant that the ospreys are civil liberties-loving birds who plan to make occasional flights over into Florida. Using tiny video cameras, they’ll surveil Karl Rove’s beachhouse of sin, documenting activity for possible future criminal investigations.

For those who doubt that birds are intelligent enough to do this, please refer to a recent issue of National Geographic on the surprisingly-advanced logic abilities not just of mammals but of those feathery descendants of the dinosaurs.

And ospreys are fun to watch, too. I believe, like me, they eat fish every morning.

Ospreys are fascinating birds. Before my wife’s accident I would duck hunt and I vividly remember being in a duck blind early one morning watching an Osprey far up in the sky tuck back its wings and dive straight into the bay where we were. It immediately shot back out of the water with a fish in its talons.

I live near the Paint Rock River and Lake Guntersville. A couple of weeks ago my wife was on the back porch and saw a bald eagle soaring overhead. At the Guntersville Dam there is an old dead tree where eagles roost early in the morning after leaving the nest. I haven’t photographed them in a couple of years, but I may try again soon. Unfortunately the longest lens I own is a 200mm.

The wind out of the northwest is relentless here at the beach, so the search for birds to photograph is slow. But that is not stopping the spring breakers from packing the Flora-Bama.

Mostly we are taking a vacation. Not sure when we will have more to report. If anyone wants to get in touch, call the cell. Not sending e-mail from the road.
