Siegelman 60 Minutes Update
February 17th, 2008I would have posted this a good bit sooner, but it just goes to show you that the Alabama Power ad campaign now running in all the Newhouse newspapers and on the al.com Website right now is pure hogwash.
“Alabama Power: Always On?” Not around here, ever. My power has been going on and off all morning, perhaps due to a little rain and wind, knocking out the Charter Internet connection as well, forcing a restart process that requires restarting and reprogramming the router and restarting all three computers.
I’m told by a reader that Alabama Public Television “For the Record” host Tim Lennox is reporting on his blog that CBS’s “60 Minutes” will run its show tonight.
The long awaited 60 Minutes piece on former Governor Siegelman’s prosecution is scheduled to run Sunday night. It was so long in coming that some bloggers were speculating that Alabama’s Republican Governor had used his business connections to get CBS to kill the story. Apparently not. We’ll see if the story includes any new information about the allegations that Siegelman was targeted for prosecution for political reasons.
But my sources in New York and elsewhere say this is mere poppycock. A key source who is in a direct position to know says the best guess is that the Siegelman segment will run Feb. 24, next Sunday, although that may depend on whether Republican presidential candidate and Senator John McCain accepts an offer to do a lead segment interview. If so, that would push it back one more week.
This is also confirmed by the CBS Website for 60 Minutes Up Next. It ain’t gonna air tonight, people.
This just goes to show you can’t trust the mainstream media in Alabama, certainly not the broadcast media, even public television. I’ve tried to get Lennox to get me on his Friday night show to set the record straight in the case of Jill Simpson and Don Siegelman, but apparently the producers there would rather have reporters on who have not actually covered the story and who know for real what is going on.
Now, back to some real news. I hate these speculative stories, but there’s no way I’m going to get beat on this story by some blogger.
I’ve been trying to work on my Sunday column. If the power and Net connection will stay on long enough, I’ll have something a little more profound to say a little later today. Check back often. You just never know when real news is going to break.
