The End of America: Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot

November 30th, 2007

I’ve been writing about this for the past three years, but hey, you don’t have to believe me.

Watch and listen to this video of Naomi Wolf from October 11, 2007 at Kane Hall on the University of Washington campus.

The End of America: Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot

Don’t confuse her with Naomi Klein of Harper’s magazine and The Shock Doctrine. Both Naomi’s are heros of mine. Maybe if you take the time to investigate and educate yourself, you might agree?

Democracy ain’t dead yet, but without some people getting off the couch, it will be soon. Look what happened to Don Siegelman…

When Bush talks about democracy in iraq, he is talking about Corporate Capitalism, not Democracy.

Wake up people! I know it’s coming up on Christmas and all, and THEY know it too.

The time to act is NOW!

Sex Toys for Troy King Story May Make Rolling Stone

November 29th, 2007

Alabama’s buxom and bombastic pot smoking libertarian terror is at it again, going after Attorney General Troy King with more love dolls in the mail, this time in a call from Rolling Stone magazine’s National Affairs desk – the old home in print of our good friend Hunter S. Thompson, doctor of Gonzo Journalism.

At least King can be happy that he may soon be famous, er infamous.

But we understand Santa Claus and the U.S. Postal Service have been more than nice with all those naughty sex toy gifts. He’ll have plenty of sex dolls to play with after his fall from state politics.

Maybe he can take them all with him up there to Bucks Pocket and they can hang out in a trailer with all the other former politicians – and white trash…

Virtual Alabama Spying System With Google Earth A First

November 29th, 2007

News Flash: The Huntsville Times Montgomery bureau reporter, Bob Lowry, doesn’t want you to know this. But there may be a down side to the new “Virtual Alabama” spying system that uses technology developed by Google Earth to map everything in the state with satellite imagary, even inside buildings.

He wrote a press release on the subject for today’s paper, giving all the credit to Gov. Bob Riley and saying how great it will be for firefighters and such.

‘Virtual Alabama’ With Google Earth Unveiled

But due to recent national stories raising concerns about the loss of privacy in America with the federal government’s domestic spying operations under President George W. Bush, it seemed to us as if a few skeptical questions might be raised in the coverage of this event instead of covering it like a small town ground breaking or something. Where’s ole Bob Riley with his picture on the front page with the giant scissors?

So, I e-mailed old Bob Lowry, who has been dutifully running the establishment press releases without asking skeptical questions for many years in this state.

Hey Bob,

Do you think, instead of a press release, it might have been worth asking a skeptical question or two?

Is there a potential downside to this? Spying on Americans? Bush’s domestic critics? Is it truly “all good” man?

His reply?

Actually, those questions were raised and addressed.

So I asked:

Then where is the report on them?

His reply?

Hate to break it to you, but you’re not my editor.

So I said:

So the readers don’t get to know about those questions?

I guess not. Now they know…

Senator Leahy Rejects Bush’s Executive Privilege Claims

November 29th, 2007

U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy ruled illegal the president’s executive privilege claims protecting long-time political adviser Karl Rove and President Bush’s chief of staff, John Bolten, saying evidence shows the president was not involved in the firings of U.S. attorneys last winter.

Leahy directed Rove, Bolten, former political director Sara Taylor and her deputy, J. Scott Jennings, to comply ”immediately” with their subpoenas for documents and information about the White House’s role in the firings of U.S. attorneys or face contempt charges.

”I hereby rule that those claims are not legally valid to excuse current and former White House employees from appearing, testifying and producing documents related to this investigation,” Leahy wrote.

The ruling clears the way for the comittee to vote on whether to advance contempt citations to the full Senate.

The executive privilege claim ”is surprising in light of the significant and uncontroverted evidence that the president had no involvement in these firings,” Leahy, D-Vt., wrote in his ruling. ”The president’s lack of involvement in these firings – by his own account and that of many others – calls into question any claim of executive privilege.”

This ruling also opens the door to a more detailed investigation of Rove’s role in political prosecutions by the U.S. Department of Justice, now under the control of newly confirmed Attorney General Michael Mukasey.

Interestingly, the right-wing smear machine out of the Montgomery U.S. attorneys office has been strangely quiet in recent weeks since Mukasey’s Senate confirmation. Apparently, one of his first acts upon taking over the reins at Justice was placing a gag order on assistant U.S. attorney Lous Franklin.

Also, sources say Rob Riley, the son of Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, has pulled out of cooperating with CBS’s “60 Minutes,” which could air its show on the case of jailed former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman in the next week or two.

Critics Oppose Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act

November 28th, 2007

The National Lawyers Guild and the Society of American Law Teachers are urging citizens to get involved to oppose the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007, which could make it out of a U.S. Senate committee and be voted into law on the floor by Christmas.

It was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Oct. 23 on a cowardly vote of 404-6, and critics say it will likely lead to the criminalization of beliefs, dissent and protest, and invite more draconian surveillance of Internet communications.

This bill would establish a Commission to study and report on “facts and causes” of “violent radicalism” and “extremist belief systems.” It defines “violent radicalism” as “adopting or promoting an extremist belief system for the purpose of facilitating ideologically based violence to advance political, religious, or social change.”

The term “extremist belief system” is not defined; it could refer to liberalism, nationalism, socialism, anarchism, communism, etc.

“Ideologically based violence” is defined in the bill as the “use, planned use, or threatened use of force or violence by a group or individual to promote the group or individual’s political, religious, or social beliefs.” Thus, “force” and “violence” are used interchangeably.

If a group of people blocked the doorway of a corporation that manufactured weapons, or blocked a sidewalk during an anti-war demonstration, it might constitute the use of “force” to promote “political beliefs.”

The bill charges that the Internet “has aided in facilitating violent radicalization, ideologically based violence, and the homegrown terrorism process in the United States by providing access to broad and constant streams of terrorist-related propaganda to United States citizens.”

This provision could be used to conduct more intrusive surveillance of Internet communications without warrants.
