He was wound pretty tight, an Englishman who jumped ship first to America for our Revolution and later to France for theirs. And, Paine was famously atheist, as you probably know. He once described Christianity as a "parody" of pagan "sun worship." No surprise he's never mentioned by fundamentalists when citing the religiosity of our founding fathers. Neither is Jefferson, a confirmed deist, etc. Most of the religious rightists would have heart attacks if they knew what many or even most of the founders believed, or didn't, by way of spirituality.
